Vents, Deflect or Cover

Writer's picture: Joseph Joseph

A piano is a rather large expensive peice of musical furniture. Heating and cooling vents greatly affect the piano, sometime silently destroying them, but there are times when you can only fit your piano in a particular space or room in the house. Whenever I come to a tuning appointment and feel air moving while at the piano or see a vent in close approximity to the piano I will recommend a vent deflector or cover.

A vent deflector can help redirect air away from the piano or further into a room and is typically the only option if the vent is essential for maintaining comfort in the space.. Even though there are less expensive options, I always recommend this one for ceiling vents because it is secure with five powerful magnets instead of the usual two. This ensures it stays securely in place above your instrument or head, providing peace of mind. Additionally, it is designed to adjust to different vent lengths and effectively redirects air.

If the vent is within 4ft of the piano, a vent cover is preferred. Simply closing the vent may not be sufficient, although this deters the air to move to other vents, it doesn't completely seal the vent. Closing the vent and using a magnetic cover seal is a sure way to protect your expensive piano. You'll only need to measure your vent to order the correct size.
